Description

The Swiss Mushroom Melt Delight is a savory and satisfying sandwich combining sautéed mushrooms, optional protein such as beef or poultry patties, and melted Swiss cheese on toasted soft rolls. This quick 25-minute recipe blends umami flavors with fresh veggies and melted cheese to create a delicious and comforting meal perfect for lunch or dinner.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 4 sandwich rolls or buns (preferably soft, like brioche or Kaiser rolls)
  • 1 lb fresh mushrooms (cremini or white button), sliced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or butter
  • 1/2 lb beef patties, chicken breasts, or turkey patties (optional for added protein)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 8 slices Swiss cheese
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped (optional, for garnish)
  • 1 tablespoon butter (for toasting the buns)
  • Lettuce
  • Tomato slices
  • Pickles

Instructions

  1. Cook the Mushrooms: Heat olive oil or butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced mushrooms and cook, stirring occasionally, until they soften and release their moisture, about 7-10 minutes. Season with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Set aside.
  2. Cook the Protein (if using): If you’re using beef patties, chicken breasts, or turkey patties, cook them according to your preference. Season with salt and pepper. For burgers, cook on medium-high heat for about 4-5 minutes per side until the meat reaches the desired doneness. For chicken or turkey, cook until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C).
  3. Toast the Buns: While the protein cooks, spread butter on the cut sides of your sandwich buns. Toast them on a skillet or in a toaster oven until golden and crispy.
  4. Assemble the Sandwiches: Place the cooked protein (beef patty, chicken, or turkey) on the bottom half of each toasted bun. Layer a generous amount of sautéed mushrooms on top of the protein, followed by two slices of Swiss cheese per sandwich.
  5. Melt the Cheese: Place the sandwiches under a broiler or in a microwave for 30 seconds, just until the Swiss cheese melts and becomes gooey.
  6. Serve: Top with fresh lettuce, tomato slices, or pickles, if desired. Garnish with fresh parsley for an added touch of color.

Notes

  • Using soft rolls like brioche or Kaiser improves the sandwich texture.
  • The optional protein adds a hearty element but the sandwich can be made vegetarian without it.
  • To melt cheese, a broiler gives best results but a microwave can be a quick alternative.
  • Feel free to customize with your favorite sandwich toppings such as mustard or mayonnaise.
  • Ensure chicken or turkey is cooked to 165°F (74°C) for food safety.
