Description

A hearty and comforting slow cooker recipe featuring tender potatoes, savory kielbasa sausage, and flavorful cabbage, cooked low and slow to meld the delicious smoky spices with fresh vegetables. Perfect for an easy, satisfying weeknight meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Sausage

  • 1 pound kielbasa sausage, sliced into 1/2-inch pieces

Vegetables

  • 1 pound red potatoes, diced
  • 1/2 head green cabbage, chopped
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced

Liquids & Seasonings

  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or butter

Instructions

  1. Brown the Kielbasa: Heat olive oil or butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add kielbasa slices and cook for 2 to 3 minutes per side until lightly browned, then transfer the browned sausage to the slow cooker.
  2. Prepare the Vegetables: Add the diced potatoes, chopped cabbage, chopped onion, and minced garlic into the slow cooker on top of the kielbasa.
  3. Season and Combine: Sprinkle smoked paprika, salt, black pepper, and optional red pepper flakes evenly over the mixture. Pour the chicken broth over the ingredients, then gently stir to combine the seasonings and broth without disturbing the layering too much.
  4. Slow Cook: Cover the slow cooker and cook on low for 6 to 7 hours or on high for 3 to 4 hours. Cook until the potatoes are tender and the cabbage is soft.
  5. Finish and Serve: Before serving, stir the dish gently to distribute the flavors evenly. Adjust seasoning with extra salt or pepper if needed, then serve hot.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, add a splash of apple cider vinegar or a pinch of caraway seeds before cooking.
  • Smoked sausage can be used as a substitute for kielbasa.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
