Ingredients
Scale
Beef Patties
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
Bread and Cheese
- 6 slices rye bread
- 6 slices cheddar cheese
- 6 slices provolone cheese
- 6 tablespoons butter, softened and unsalted
Secret Sauce
- 1/4 cup mayonnaise
- 2 tablespoons chopped bacon pieces
- 3 tablespoons ketchup
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon relish
Instructions
- Prepare the Patties: Form the ground beef into 3 flattened patties and season evenly with onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper to taste.
- Cook the Patties: Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and cook the patties until they are thoroughly cooked through, about 4-5 minutes per side. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
- Make the Secret Sauce: In a small bowl, combine the mayonnaise, chopped bacon pieces, ketchup, sugar, and relish. Mix well until all ingredients are blended smoothly.
- Toast the Bread: Spread softened butter on one side of each slice of rye bread. Place the bread slices buttered side down onto the skillet over medium heat to toast them lightly.
- Assemble: On each buttered slice, layer 2 slices of provolone cheese, place one cooked beef patty on top, and add 2 slices of cheddar cheese over the patty. Spread a generous amount of the secret sauce on another slice of bread and place it sauce side down on top to complete the sandwich.
- Grill the Sandwiches: Cook the sandwiches in the skillet, flipping carefully once the cheese starts to melt and the bread beneath has turned golden brown. Grill the other side until it is also golden brown and the cheese is fully melted, about 3-4 minutes per side.
- Serve: Remove the patty melts from the skillet and serve warm immediately for the best taste and texture.
Notes
- You can substitute rye bread with sourdough or whole wheat bread if preferred.
- For a spicier kick, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or hot sauce to the secret sauce.
- Make sure the butter is softened for easy spreading and even toasting of the bread.
- Use freshly cooked bacon pieces for the secret sauce for better flavor, or use pre-cooked bacon bits as a convenient alternative.
- Keep the heat medium to medium-high to avoid burning the bread while the cheese melts properly.
