Description

These Jalapeno Cheddar Yogurt Bagels are a quick and flavorful homemade bagel recipe, combining spicy jalapenos with sharp cheddar cheese and protein-rich Greek yogurt for a soft and delicious twist on classic bagels. Perfect for a savory breakfast or snack, these bagels are baked to golden perfection in just 35 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale

Dough

  • 125 grams all-purpose flour
  • 10 grams baking powder
  • 1.5 grams salt
  • 240 grams low-fat Greek yogurt

Toppings and Mix-ins

  • 1 large egg, whisked
  • 2 small jalapeno peppers, deseeded (optional); one diced, one sliced
  • 60 grams shredded cheddar cheese, plus extra for topping

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Set the oven temperature to 200°C (400°F) to prepare for baking.
  2. Prepare Jalapenos: Dice one jalapeno finely and slice the other into thin rounds, setting both aside for later incorporation and topping.
  3. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a mixing bowl, thoroughly whisk together the flour, salt, and baking powder to ensure even distribution.
  4. Form Dough: Add the Greek yogurt to the dry mixture and begin mixing with a rubber spatula until the dough starts to form. Then knead the dough with your hands to achieve a cohesive consistency, adding flour to your hands if the dough is too sticky.
  5. Add Jalapenos and Cheese: Fold in the diced jalapeno and 60 grams shredded cheddar cheese gently to distribute evenly throughout the dough.
  6. Knead the Dough: Transfer dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for 2–3 minutes until smoother and manageable.
  7. Shape Bagels: Divide dough into four equal portions for smaller bagels or two portions for regular size. Roll each portion into a 15 cm strand and pinch the ends together to form a ring.
  8. Prepare for Baking: Place formed bagels on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Brush each with the whisked egg, top with 2–3 jalapeno slices, sprinkle additional cheddar cheese, and optionally add a pinch of flaky salt.
  9. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 18–22 minutes until the tops develop a golden brown color.
  10. Cool and Serve: Allow bagels to cool for 5–10 minutes. Before serving, slice each bagel in half and toast for 2 minutes to crisp the interior.

Notes

  • Deseeding jalapenos is optional depending on your preferred spice level.
  • Use low-fat Greek yogurt to keep the bagels tender without excess fat.
  • You can adjust the amount of cheddar cheese to your taste or use a sharper variety for more flavor.
  • Brushing with egg wash helps to achieve a golden crust and better topping adhesion.
  • To enhance texture, toast bagels before serving for a crispier bite.
