Description

Create a magical, glowing fireworks display in a jar with this fun and simple activity. Using warm water, vegetable oil, and glow-in-the-dark paint, this interactive project is perfect for kids and adults alike to enjoy an enchanting luminescent effect that swirls and bursts like fireworks.

Ingredients

Scale

Materials

  • Clear glass or plastic jar with lid
  • Warm water (about ¾ jar full)
  • 2–3 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • Glow-in-the-dark paint (washable, non-toxic recommended)
  • Food coloring (optional, a few drops)
  • Fork or toothpick (for mixing)
  • Small bowl
  • Optional: blacklight for extra glow effect

Instructions

  1. Fill the jar: Fill your jar about three-quarters full with warm water to provide the base for the glowing oil and paint mixture.
  2. Mix oil and paint: In a small bowl, combine 2 to 3 tablespoons of vegetable oil with several drops of glow-in-the-dark paint. Add a few drops of food coloring if you want a colored effect. Stir the mixture well using a fork or toothpick to evenly distribute the paint in the oil.
  3. Add oil mixture to jar: Gently pour the oil and paint mixture into the jar filled with warm water, allowing the oil to float on top of the water.
  4. Watch the reaction: Observe how the oil floats and how the glow paint droplets burst and swirl within the water, creating a fireworks effect inside the jar.
  5. Turn off the lights: Turn off the lights to enjoy the glowing effect created by the glow-in-the-dark paint suspended in the oil and water.
  6. Enhance the glow: Charge the jar under a bright lamp or use a blacklight to increase the intensity of the glow for a more dazzling display.

Notes

  • This project is a visual activity rather than a food recipe and is safe when using non-toxic, washable glow paint.
  • Do not ingest any materials; this is a decorative craft.
  • Use a tight lid if you want to gently shake the jar without spilling.
  • The glow effect lasts depending on the amount of light the paint absorbs before glowing.
  • For added fun, experiment with different colors of food coloring and glow paint.
