Description

This creamy Garlic Parmesan Rice is a quick and flavorful side dish featuring tender, perfectly cooked long grain rice infused with garlic and parmesan cheese. Cooked on the stovetop and finished with butter and milk, it offers a rich, comforting texture and taste that’s ideal for pairing with a variety of main courses.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 4 tablespoons butter, divided
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 1 cup long grain rice, rinsed and drained
  • 2 cups chicken broth, vegetable broth, or water
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon granulated garlic
  • 4 tablespoons whole milk
  • ½ cup shredded parmesan cheese, plus more for serving
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Parsley, green onions, or chives, optional garnish

Instructions

  1. Melt Butter and Sauté Garlic: In a skillet over medium heat, melt 3 tablespoons of butter. Add the minced garlic and cook until fragrant, about 1-2 minutes, taking care not to burn the garlic.
  2. Toast the Rice: Add the rinsed and drained long grain rice to the skillet. Stir continuously and toast the rice for 3-4 minutes until it becomes lightly golden, enhancing its nutty flavor.
  3. Add Broth and Seasonings: Pour in 2 cups of chicken broth (or vegetable broth or water), then add ½ teaspoon onion powder and ½ teaspoon granulated garlic. Stir well to combine all ingredients evenly.
  4. Simmer Covered: Reduce the heat to low, cover the skillet, and let the rice cook for 10-15 minutes or until the rice is tender and the liquid is absorbed.
  5. Finish with Dairy: Remove the skillet from heat, then add the remaining 1 tablespoon of butter, ½ cup shredded parmesan cheese, and 4 tablespoons of whole milk. Stir thoroughly until the mixture is creamy and cheese has melted completely.
  6. Season and Garnish: Season the rice with salt and freshly ground pepper to taste. Garnish with chopped parsley, green onions, or chives if desired, and a sprinkle of additional parmesan cheese. Serve hot.

Notes

  • Rinsing the rice helps remove excess starch for fluffier texture.
  • Adjust the liquid amount based on the rice brand and type for best results.
  • For a vegetarian version, use vegetable broth instead of chicken broth.
  • Adding the dairy off heat prevents cheese from becoming grainy.
  • Garnishes like fresh herbs add color and an extra layer of flavor.
