Ingredients
Scale
Dough
- 1 package refrigerated pizza dough (or homemade dough if preferred)
Filling
- 1/2 cup cooked sausage, crumbled (or any meat of choice, like pepperoni, ham, or bacon)
- 1/2 cup diced bell peppers (any color)
- 1/2 cup sliced mushrooms (optional)
- 1/4 cup sliced black olives (optional)
- 1/4 cup diced onions (optional)
- 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning or dried oregano
- Salt and pepper to taste
Topping
- 1 egg (for egg wash)
- 1 tablespoon grated Parmesan cheese (optional, for topping)
- 2 tablespoons olive oil (for brushing)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and make cleanup easier.
- Prepare the dough: Roll out the pizza dough on a lightly floured surface into a rectangle shape about 12×8 inches in size, to create a base for the filling.
- Prepare the filling: In a large bowl, combine the cooked crumbled sausage, diced bell peppers, sliced mushrooms, black olives, diced onions, shredded mozzarella, shredded cheddar cheese, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Mix everything thoroughly to evenly distribute the flavors.
- Assemble the bread: Spread the filling mixture evenly down the center of the dough rectangle, leaving approximately 1 inch of dough on each side for sealing.
- Roll up the dough: Carefully fold the edges of the dough inward, then roll the dough up like a log to enclose the filling completely. Pinch the seams tightly to seal and tuck the ends underneath to prevent filling leakage.
- Prepare the egg wash: Beat the egg in a small bowl, then brush it generously over the top of the rolled dough. This will give the bread a beautiful golden, shiny crust when baked. Optionally, sprinkle grated Parmesan cheese on top for extra flavor and crispness.
- Bake: Place the prepared roll onto the lined baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the bread turns golden brown and the filling is hot throughout.
- Cool and slice: Remove the bread from the oven and allow it to cool for a few minutes before slicing into thick, hearty pieces. Serve warm for maximum enjoyment.
Notes
- You can substitute the cooked sausage with any other cooked meat like pepperoni, ham, or bacon depending on your preference.
- Mushrooms, olives, and onions are optional but add nice texture and flavor when included.
- If you prefer a vegetarian version, omit the sausage and add more vegetables or use a meat substitute.
- Let the bread cool slightly before slicing to avoid the filling from spilling out.
- Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator and reheated in the oven for best results.
