Description

French Onions Meatloaf is a comforting and flavorful dish featuring caramelized onions mixed into a savory blend of ground beef and pork or turkey, topped with melted Gruyère or Swiss cheese. This hearty meatloaf offers a rich, tender texture and a deliciously sweet onion flavor, perfect for a satisfying family dinner.

Ingredients

Scale

Meatloaf Mixture

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef
  • 1/2 lb (225 g) ground pork or turkey
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Caramelized Onions

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

Topping

  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese
  • Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the Onions: Heat olive oil and butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onions and cook, stirring often, for 20–25 minutes until they are golden and caramelized. Stir in minced garlic and Worcestershire sauce, cooking for an additional 1–2 minutes. Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly.
  2. Mix the Meatloaf Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork or turkey, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, salt, pepper, and half of the caramelized onions. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are well blended.
  3. Shape the Meatloaf: Form the meat mixture into a loaf shape and place it on a parchment-lined baking sheet or into a loaf pan.
  4. Add Toppings and Bake: Spread the remaining caramelized onions evenly over the top of the meatloaf and sprinkle with shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 45–55 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C).
  5. Rest and Serve: Allow the meatloaf to rest for 10 minutes before slicing. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired to add a pop of color and fresh flavor.

Notes

  • Use ground turkey instead of pork for a leaner version.
  • Ensure the internal temperature reaches 160°F for safe consumption of ground meats.
  • Letting the meatloaf rest before slicing helps retain juices for a moister result.
  • Gruyère cheese adds a nutty flavor, but Swiss cheese is a great alternative.
  • Serve with mashed potatoes or a side of steamed vegetables for a complete meal.
