Description

Duchess Potatoes are an elegant and creamy mashed potato dish, piped into beautiful swirls and baked to a golden perfection. This classic French-inspired recipe combines buttery mashed potatoes with a touch of cream, egg yolks, and nutmeg, finished with an egg wash for a stunning presentation perfect for special occasions or an impressive side dish.

Ingredients

Scale

Potato Mixture

  • 2 lbs potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 2 egg yolks
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Pinch of nutmeg (optional)

Finishing

  • 1 egg (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prepare for baking the potatoes.
  2. Boil the Potatoes: Place peeled and cubed potatoes into salted boiling water and cook for 15-20 minutes until tender. Drain thoroughly and return to the pot for mashing.
  3. Mash and Mix Ingredients: Mash the cooked potatoes until smooth. Stir in the unsalted butter, heavy cream, egg yolks, salt, pepper, and optional nutmeg until the mixture is creamy and well combined.
  4. Pipe the Potatoes: Transfer the potato mixture to a piping bag fitted with a star tip. Pipe elegant swirls onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them comfortably apart.
  5. Apply Egg Wash: Beat the whole egg, then lightly brush it over the tops of the potato swirls to create a beautiful golden crust once baked.
  6. Bake: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 20–25 minutes or until the duchess potatoes turn a lovely golden brown.
  7. Serve: Remove from the oven and serve warm as a refined and delightful side dish to complement your meal.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, you can substitute some of the heavy cream with crème fraîche or sour cream.
  • If you prefer a firmer texture, reduce the amount of cream slightly.
  • Using a star tip for piping creates a classic and elegant look, but you can use a round tip if preferred.
  • To keep duchess potatoes warm before serving, place them in a low oven (around 200°F) for up to 15 minutes.
  • These potatoes pair beautifully with roasted meats and vegetables.
