Ingredients
Scale
Pastry
- 1 sheet puff pastry (store-bought or homemade)
Apple Filling
- 2 medium apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar (optional, for extra sweetness)
Sauce and Toppings
- 1/4 cup caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade)
- 1 egg (for egg wash)
- Powdered sugar (for dusting, optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure even baking.
- Prepare the Apples: In a small skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the sliced apples, cinnamon, and brown sugar if using. Sauté for 3-4 minutes until the apples start to soften slightly but still hold their shape. Remove from heat to cool briefly.
- Prepare the Puff Pastry: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the puff pastry sheet and cut it into 4-6 squares, depending on portion size desired.
- Assemble the Pastries: Place a few of the sautéed apple slices in the center of each puff pastry square. Drizzle a generous amount of caramel sauce over the apples. Fold the edges of the pastry over the apples to create a rustic, open-faced turnover, leaving some of the filling visible.
- Egg Wash: Beat the egg and brush it carefully over the exposed edges of the puff pastry. This will give the pastry a beautiful golden color and shine when baked.
- Bake: Place the assembled pastries on the prepared baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 15-18 minutes or until the puff pastry is puffed up and golden brown.
- Garnish and Serve: Once baked, drizzle additional caramel sauce on top of the warm pastries. Dust lightly with powdered sugar if desired. Serve immediately for the best flavor and texture.
Notes
- You can substitute different types of apples depending on your preferred sweetness and texture, such as Granny Smith for tartness or Fuji for sweetness.
- If you prefer a vegan version, use a plant-based butter and substitute the egg wash with a mixture of maple syrup and water.
- To make the caramel sauce at home, melt sugar until golden and add cream and butter; cool before using.
- These pastries are best served warm but can be stored in an airtight container and reheated in the oven for a few minutes.
- Adding chopped nuts like pecans or walnuts inside the filling can add a nice crunch and extra flavor.
