Description

A flavorful and easy Asian-inspired Black Pepper Chicken stir-fry featuring tender bite-sized chicken thighs cooked with green bell pepper, onion, garlic, and a savory sauce made from soy, oyster, and hoisin sauces. Perfect for a quick weeknight dinner served over steamed rice.

Ingredients

Scale

Chicken and Marinade

  • 1 pound boneless, skinless chicken thighs, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons water

Vegetables and Aromatics

  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced

Seasoning and Cooking

  • 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper (more to taste)
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • salt to taste
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • Optional: green onions for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prepare the sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, sugar, freshly ground black pepper, and cornstarch mixed with water until smooth. Set aside.
  2. Cook the chicken: Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the chicken pieces and cook for about 5-6 minutes, stirring occasionally, until browned and cooked through. Remove the chicken from the pan and set aside.
  3. Sauté the vegetables: In the same pan, add the chopped onion and green bell pepper. Sauté for 3-4 minutes until slightly softened. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional 30 seconds until fragrant.
  4. Combine and finish: Return the cooked chicken to the pan and pour the prepared sauce over the ingredients. Stir well to combine and cook for another 2-3 minutes, allowing the sauce to thicken and coat the chicken evenly.
  5. Adjust seasoning and serve: Taste the dish and adjust seasoning by adding more black pepper or salt if desired. Serve hot over steamed rice and garnish with green onions if using.

Notes

  • You can substitute chicken thighs with chicken breast if preferred.
  • Add broccoli or snap peas for extra vegetables and nutritional value.
  • For extra heat, include a pinch of red pepper flakes while cooking.
